Overview of the Speaker

The Free State Legislature is an activist legislature that champions democracy. The Legislature ensures that fundamental rights of the electorate and inhabitants of the Free State are protected; their integrity respected and that meaningful processes are in place to entrench their freedoms. So, the role played by the Legislature in this regard is to ensure that the Executive Council addresses political, socio-economic challenging the inhabitants of the province.

The responsibility of the Office of the Speaker is to execute authority in the Legislature through presiding over the proceedings of the House and ensure that resources allocated to the Legislature are utilized as per programmes of the Legislature

The office is constituted by electing a Speaker during the sitting of the House – implying, the House will resolve to decide who should become the Speaker. The Office extends to the Office of the Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of Committees. It should be noted that the Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of Committee are Members of the Committee on Rules and Orders; and the Speaker the Chairperson of the committee.
