The Chairperson of the Household Committee on the Women’s Multiparty Caucus (WMPC), Hon. Nthabiseng Garekoe, led a candlelight and solidarity gathering in honour of victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children at the Southern Life Building committee room 2 in Bloemfontein.
The gathering brought together Free State Legislature staff, faith leaders, and Buwa Monna Organisation who united under one roof to remember the women and children whose lives have been lost to GBV. Hon. Garekoe emphasised that the ongoing crisis of violence requires continuous community involvement, collective action, and stronger support systems for survivors.
The candlelighting moment was the heart of the ceremony. Each candle symbolised a life taken too soon and a reminder of the urgent need to protect vulnerable groups.
Pastors from various churches offered prayers and words of encouragement, calling for unity and compassion. Their presence highlighted the important role that faith-based organisations play in community healing and in promoting a culture of accountability and respect.
Hon. Garekoe concluded by urging communities to ensure that the fight against GBV continues beyond the 16 Days of Activism. She called for consistent advocacy, stronger partnerships, and ongoing support for survivors as we work towards building a safer and more compassionate society.
